Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

The birth of Ava DuVernay occurred on August 24 1972, in Long Beach California. DuVernay received encouragement from Aunt Denise at the age of an infant. Her aunt was a nurse, who worked night shifts so that she could devote her days to theatre and literature as well as art. DuVernay became enamored with the film of 1961 West Side Story after her aunt recommended it to DuVernay. DuVernay was educated by her mother about how the arts can serve to promote activism. DuVernay had a mother who was socially conscious and taught her how to utilize the arts as a means to express herself. Even though DuVernay was raised in Compton with her parents, she spent every summer living in Lowndes County Alabama where her father's family lived for generations. DuVernay's father recalled watching the historical civil rights marches across the Edmund Pettus Bridge in the adjacent town Selma Alabama. DuVernay used the summers she spent in Alabama as inspiration for her film Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay earned her Saint Joseph High School diploma in Lakewood California. In the year 1990 she graduated from the Saint Joseph High School located in Lakewood CA. DuVernay developed an interest in journalistic broadcasting while in school. As an intern, she worked for CBS News at the time of O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay was appointed to watch and search the home for a specific Jury member. As a result of her duties she was dissatisfied with journalism, and shifted into the public relations industry. DuVernay began her first position as a publicity specialist in a small production studio right out of high school. From this position she started her own public relations company called The DuVernay Agency in 1999. In addition to PR her agency launched a number of marketing and lifestyle platforms, such as Urban Beauty Collective, the Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective, Urban Eye and HelloBeautiful. Her fame is due to her performances as Anna Payne in American Experience, (1987) A More Perfect Union and A More Perfect Union (2009).
